**日本の童話界に光をあたえた小説家**
小説家・児童文学作家。日本のアンデルセンとも呼ばれる。代表作として「金の輪」や「赤い蝋燭と人魚」を世に広めた。また、「遊蕩文学」とも呼ばれた清潔な世界を描いた小説家の一人である。
小川未明は新潟県高田五分一町（現：上越市幸町）で生まれる。父は修験者であり、春日山神社を創建したことのある人物でもあった。未明自身も15歳頃から20歳頃まで春日山神社境内の住居に住んでいた。
大学部英文科を卒業し、ラフカディオ・ハーンの講義を受けた。この影響でロシア文学に親しみ、ナロードニキの思想にも関心を寄せた。大学中には処女作「漂浪児」を雑誌『新小説』に発表し注目される。その後、「霰に霙」で小説家として一定の地位を築く。
卒業後、早稲田文学社に編集者として勤務しながら作品を多数発表する。また、生活は苦しく貧窮や病気に見舞われることもあった。友人の木村毅などが見かねて印税収入で未明のためにアンソロジー「十六集」を新潮社から出版し、二度の危篤を脱した。
1925年には早大童話会を立ち上げ、1926年に「今後を童話作家に」と題する所感を発表し童話専念を宣言する。しかし、同じ年には師の逍遥から小説家としての限界を指摘されたとも言われる。
1946年に日本児童文学者協会の初代会長となり、日本芸術院賞を受賞した。また、文化功労者にも選ばれ、日本芸術院会員に推挙される。しかし、「少年文学宣言」が発表され、古い児童文学として否定されたという苦渋の晩年も送った。
1961年に脳出血で死去した。79歳没。

Mimei Ogawa was born in Takada Gobuichi-cho, Niigata Prefecture (currently Saiwai-cho, Joetsu City). His father was an ascetic ascetic monk and also the person who founded Kasugayama Shrine. Mimei himself lived in a house on the grounds of Kasugayama Shrine from around the age of 15 to around 20.
He graduated from the university's English department and took lectures by Lafcadio Hearn. As a result of this influence, he became familiar with Russian literature and became interested in the ideas of the Narodniki. While at university, he published his first work, ``Wandering Child,'' in the magazine ``Shin Novel'' and gained attention. Afterwards, he achieved a certain status as a novelist with ``Hail to Hail''.
After graduating, he published many works while working as an editor at Waseda Bungakusha. In addition, life was difficult and they were often faced with poverty and illness. His friend Tsuyoshi Kimura and others could not bear to see him, so they used the royalties to publish an anthology called ``Jurokushu'' by Shinchosha for Dawn, and he was able to save himself from two near-deaths.
In 1925, he established the Waseda University Children's Story Society, and in 1926, he published a statement titled ``I Will Become a Children's Story Author in the Future'' and declared that he would devote himself to children's stories. However, it is said that in the same year, his mentor Shoyo pointed out his limitations as a novelist.
In 1946, he became the first president of the Japan Children's Literature Association and won the Japan Art Academy Award. He was also selected as a Person of Cultural Merit and recommended to be a member of the Japan Art Academy. However, he had a difficult time in his later years, when the ``Declaration of Children's Literature'' was announced and his work was rejected as old-fashioned children's literature.
He died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1961. Died at the age of 79.
