Novelist and essayist Hiroyuki Itsuki was born in 1932. After Japan's defeat in the war, he was moved to Fukuoka Prefecture in 1947. After dropping out of Waseda University, he wrote lyrics for radio programs and commercial songs. He has been active as a writer since the 1950s and won the Naoki Prize for ``Farewell to Moscow.'' Many of his works have themes of a wandering way of life known as deracinée and nihilism, and have had a great influence on young people. Since then, he has published many bestsellers such as ``The Gate of Youth.'' Since the 1990s, he has written many works that are interested in Buddhism and Pure Land philosophy.
