Motoo Furuta, a researcher of modern Vietnamese history, is a Japanese historian and professor emeritus and visiting professor at the University of Tokyo. His work on the history of ethnic policy of Vietnamese communists was recognized and he was recognized as an academic doctor. He also served as chairman of the Japan-Vietnam Friendship Association, and was appointed president of Vietnam-Japan University in 2016.
As a historian, he graduated from Azabu High School in 1968, and in 1974 from the Department of Asian Studies, Faculty of Liberal Arts, University of Tokyo. After dropping out of the doctoral program at the university's graduate school, he served as an assistant, and was later promoted to assistant professor and then professor.
