**日本古代史に尽きる茶の湯の魅力者**
歴史学者。専攻は日本文化史。国際日本文化研究センター・滋賀県立大学名誉教授、財団法人京都市芸術文化協会顧問、元京都市美術館館長。
山口県生まれ。1953年に京都大学文学部史学科を卒業。同大学院に学び、1958年博士課程を中退。その後は京都女子大学助教授、1966年に教授昇格、1987年の国際日本文化研究センター設立とともに教授となり、1995年に定年退官し名誉教授となった。その後も滋賀県立大学教授、京都市歴史資料館館長を兼ねた。
日本古代史が専門だったが、その後茶の湯研究に進み、1993年の茶の湯文化学会設立に参加、日本の宮廷文化について多くの著作がある。

**Charm of tea ceremony throughout ancient Japanese history**
Historian. My major is Japanese cultural history. Professor emeritus of the International Research Center for Japanese Studies and the University of Shiga Prefecture, advisor to the Kyoto City Arts and Culture Association, and former director of the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art.
Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of History, Faculty of Letters, Kyoto University in 1953. Studied at the same graduate school and dropped out of the doctoral course in 1958. After that, she became an assistant professor at Kyoto Women's University, then was promoted to full professor in 1966, then became a professor when the International Research Center for Japanese Studies was established in 1987, and retired in 1995 to become a professor emeritus. After that, he also served as a professor at Shiga Prefectural University and director of the Kyoto City History Museum.
Although he specialized in ancient Japanese history, he later moved on to study the tea ceremony, participated in the establishment of the Tea Ceremony Culture Society in 1993, and has written many books on Japanese court culture.
