Scholar of Japanese literature and professor emeritus at Waseda University. Specializes in medieval military stories. Born in Sado, Niigata Prefecture. Graduated from Waseda University's Faculty of Letters in 1968 and completed its graduate school in 1971. In 1972, he became an assistant at the Faculty of Education, Iwate University, and in 1974 he became a full-time lecturer, and in 1977 he received the Japan Classical Literature Society Award and the 9th Kubota Soraho Award. In 1998, he received a Ph.D. in Literature from Waseda University for ``The Formation and Development of the Heiji Monogatari.'' His books include ``Heiji Monogatari,'' ``The Birth of the Heike Monogatari,'' and ``The World of Ikusa Monogatari.''
