加藤周一 / Shuichi Kato
**A critic and novelist whose mission is to "protect intellectual freedom and enlighten the world and humanity"**
Shuichi Kato (1919-2008) was a Japanese critic and novelist. He held a doctorate in medicine, specializing in internal medicine and hematology. He served as a professor at Sophia University and a lecturer at Yale University, and was one of the initiators of "Kujo no Kai," which he formed with philosopher Shunsuke Tsurumi and writer Kenzaburo Oe.
Kato was interested in literature since his student days, forming "Matinee Poetic" with Shinichiro Nakamura and Takehiko Fukunaga. He published poetry, and "Sakura Yokocho" became famous. Later, he also participated in the New Fixed-Form Poetry movement.
Immediately after Japan's defeat in World War II, he personally witnessed the damage from the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and participated in surveys of the reality of atomic bomb casualties as a member of the Japan-U.S. Joint Investigation Team on Atomic Bomb Effects. He married for the first time in 1946.
In 1951, he became a French government scholarship student, and while conducting hematology research at the University of Paris, he published civilization criticism and literary criticism in Japanese magazines and newspapers. Later, he returned to Japan and published a critique titled "The Hybrid Nature of Japanese Culture," and a book titled "Mongrel Culture." In 1958, he retired from medical practice and thereafter became an independent critic.
While Kato was interested in resistance literature, he stated about Paul Valéry, "The fate of that poet seemed more important than the fate of an empire on Earth." He also participated in the compilation of the "World Encyclopedia" and authored its entries.
