Mieko Kamiya (Mieko Maeda before marriage) was born in Okayama City on January 12, 1914, the eldest daughter of Tamon Maeda, an official of the Ministry of Home Affairs, and his wife Fusako. Besides her older brother Yoichi, she later had one son and two daughters. In April of that year, her father, Tamon, was transferred to an executive position in Nagasaki Prefecture, and the family moved to Nagasaki. The following year, he was assigned to the Ministry of Home Affairs in Tokyo, and they moved there.
