Kiyonori Konakamura, who distinguished himself as a leading scholar of Japanese literature and history, was a renowned scholar active from the Edo period to the Meiji era. He authored numerous works, including a historical book that criticized the old theory of "Reisanben."
Kiyonori Konakamura was born in Edo in 1821 (Bunsei 4) and later married the Kokugaku scholar Yoshitaka Ikebe. After inheriting his adoptive father's business while also pursuing his studies, he became a disciple of Uchimoto Motoori in 1855 (Ansei 2) and, starting the following year, became a professor at the Kishu Domain's Kogakukan. In 1869 (Meiji 2), he entered government service at the Dajokan (Grand Council of State) as a junior assistant professor at the university. He subsequently served as Jingi Gon-Dashi (Assistant Senior Officer of the Department of Divinities) in the Jingikan (Department of Divinities) and Kyobu Dairoku (Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Education) in the Kyobusho (Ministry of Education). In 1878 (Meiji 11), he became a lecturer at the University of Tokyo and a special appointee at the Shushikan (Historical Compilation Bureau), and the following year, he was involved in the compilation of "Koji Ruien." In 1886 (Meiji 19), he became a professor concurrently in the Faculty of Law and Faculty of Letters at the Imperial University and also assumed the position of chairman of the "Koji Ruien" compilation committee.
