日本のキリスト教思想家・文学者・伝道者・聖書学者。福音主義信仰と時事社会批判に基づく日本独自の無教会主義を唱えた。代表的日本人という著者の筆頭でもある。
水産学を専攻し、札幌農学校を首席で卒業した。その後も水産関連の仕事を行いながら伝道活動にも励み、南2条西6丁目に基督教会（独立キリスト教会）を創立する。キリスト教への改宗は札幌の学生集団である札幌バンドによって行われ、それらの集団の中心人物となる。

Japanese Christian thinker, literary figure, evangelist, and Bible scholar. He advocated a uniquely Japanese agnosticism based on evangelical faith and criticism of current social events. He is also one of the leading Japanese authors.
He majored in fisheries science and graduated at the top of his class from Sapporo Agricultural College. Afterwards, while working in the fisheries industry, he also worked hard at evangelism, and founded the Christian Church (Independent Christian Church) in Minami 2-jo Nishi 6-chome. His conversion to Christianity was carried out by the Sapporo Band, a student group in Sapporo, and he became a central figure in that group.
