Early life
Born in 1894 in Nabari Town, Naga District, Mie Prefecture (now Nabari City). His registered domicile was Tsu City in the same prefecture. The Hirai family was of samurai lineage, with ancestors who were local samurai in Izu Ito. They later served the Todo family of the Ise-Tsu domain, and Ranpo's grandfather's generation was the last to serve as a retainer of the Todo family.
Debut as a writer
In 1923 (Taisho 12), he debuted with "The Two-Sen Copper Coin," which was highly praised by Amemura Morishita and Fuki Ozakai and published in "Shin Seinen." Strongly influenced by Western detective novels, he aimed for orthodox detective fiction while also writing works that could be considered unconventional.
