A scholar of Japanese literature from Niigata Prefecture. He also works as a Japanese linguist and is a professor emeritus at Niigata University. He annotated works such as ``Sasekishu'' and ``Uji Shurei Monogatari,'' and established a classical hermeneutics that left behind many discoveries. He also taught as a guest lecturer at his own laboratory, fishing for sweetfish in the Agano River near his home, and eating salted uruka, the innards of the sweetfish, as an accompaniment to sake. In 1972, he was recognized as a Niigata Minamata disease patient, and in 1978 he received the title of professor emeritus. Tsunaya Watanabe passed away in 1979 at the age of 65 due to cirrhosis of the liver.
